We are a community filled to its borders with history: ancient Indian sites, battlefields of  the American Revolution, historic plantations, and beautiful homes. Although primarily an agriculture county, Newberry has exchanged its  reliance on cotton as a cash crop for dependence on poultry and eggs, beef and dairy cattle, and timber and pulpwood.Newberry County has several established industrial parks with available water and sewer, ample electricity and convenience to major highways. There is also potential for new parks from several large sites across the county. Newberry County includes eight communities: Chappells, Silverstreet, Pomaria, Kinards,  Whitmire, Prosperity, Little Mountain, and Peak.Chappells was an important depot on the Columbia-Greenville Railroad which came through in 1851. Pictured is Hickory Bay Lane in Chappells. Silverstreet, originally called Shop Springs Post Office, was incorporated in 1910. Originally known as "Countsville", Pomaria was one of Newberry's earliest settlements. more... |
