Background

Newberry County (population 34,160) is located in the central Piedmont region of South Carolina between the Broad and Saluda Rivers. It is less than one hour from the metropolitan areas of Columbia and Greenville-Spartanburg. Lake Murray and Lake Greenwood, two large man-made lakes, add miles of recreational and scenic shorelines to the county. The mild climate and productive farmland make it a good location for agriculture and forestry, while a progressive attitude for economic development is attractive to industries.

Founded in 1785, Newberry County enjoys a proud and diverse cultural heritage. Newberry College, a Lutheran-supported liberal arts school was founded in 1856. The county seat of Newberry (population 10, 542) offers the security of a small town with a convenient downtown district. In 1996, Newberry was listed in Crampton’s The 100 Best Small Towns in America and, in 2001, Newberry was recognized by Sweitzer & Fields as one of the The 50 Best Small Southern Towns. The newly renovated Newberry Opera House is a cultural center for the region.

Whether you're looking for recreation, history, fine shops, art, entertainment, business opportunity, or a place to call home, Newberry is what you've been looking for!
